Blueware Transforms Student’s Green Idea into Reality at USM

Penang, 29th Jan 2024 – In a significant triumph, students from Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) School of Chemical Engineering won a competition hosted by ATLAS Vending, with Blueware Sdn Bhd turning their winning concept into reality. This groundbreaking idea centres around a Reverse Vending Machine (RVM), seamlessly incorporated into ATLAS vending machines, offering users a sustainable and rewarding recycling experience.

The Innovative Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) Concept

A team of four students from the Chemical Engineering and Material Engineering departments proposed a vending machine with a unique twist – not only does it dispense beverages, but it also has an integrated recycling system. Users can easily drop aluminium cans or PET bottles into the machine, earning points that work as discounts for their next purchases. The straightforward process, requiring just a mobile phone registration, aims to make recycling more accessible and encourage widespread participation.

The Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) lets users accumulate credits by recycling, and these credits can be redeemed as discounts for future purchases. Thanks to Blueware’s efforts, this feature is smoothly integrated into ATLAS vending machines. Users can log in to their accounts, redeem their earned credits, and effortlessly top up any remaining balance for their purchases. This user-friendly approach simplifies the recycling process and makes it convenient for the users.

Smart Technologies Implementation

Blueware has implemented the Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) with smart technology. This clever tech allows RVM to recognise eTika products and give credits accordingly for redemptions. Blueware has made the RVM solution design safe, simple and secure for all RVM users.

The successful implementation of the RVM at USM is a significant stride towards sustainability, showcasing the positive outcomes of collaborations between students and industry leaders like Blueware. Blueware’s crucial role in turning this eco-friendly solution into reality emphasises the importance of private sector involvement in promoting green practices.

Upcoming Debut at USM and Future Plans

Debuting at USM by the year-end, the RVM is set to expand to other campuses and retailers. Blueware’s dedication to a user-friendly interface and integrating smart technologies not only encourages recycling but also contributes to fostering a more environmentally conscious community.

Professor Ts. Dr. Chm. Ahmad Zuhairi Abdullah, the Dean of the School of Chemical Engineering at USM, commended the students for their remarkable achievement. The launch ceremony, attended by key figures from ATLAS Vending and Blueware, signifies a significant milestone in promoting sustainability through innovative solutions.
